Advocacy Avengers

Bullseye painted on wall with arrows at the center, word Advocacy painted next to it

The Advocacy Avengers is the DS ACT teen and young adult group for individuals who have Down syndrome.

At each meeting, our program coordinators lead individuals with Down syndrome age 16 and older through discussions, games and general good times.

In a word, DS ACT Advocacy Avengers is a BLAST!

Meetings start in February and over the course of the year, participants socialize, and they practice and refine the “soft” skills that are so important for independence and employment.

In 2018 the Avengers explored some ways they care for themselves:

They met with a relationship expert and talked about healthy friendships

They learned about healthy living, basic first aid, and they made their own first aid kits to take home.

They talked about how to use electronic calendars to schedule activities and how to handle conflicts that can come up.

And then, they planned their own pizza and bowling party!

At the DS ACT Annual Convention in the fall, the Advocacy Avengers have a whole day to themselves. In 2018 they spent their time with Fox 61 News anchors Keith McGilvery and Margaux Farrell, exploring who they are as Advocacy Avengers and how to put their best selves forward. They ROCKED the closing with a dance party!

In 2019, the Advocacy Avengers will be zeroing in on advocacy skills – the kind they can use to affect their communities and change the world!  DS ACT has added more meeting dates, a field trip option and a group volunteer opportunity to the schedule.
