The DS ACT Literacy and Education Center is a place of learning, growth and personal, family and professional empowerment located at 60 Peter Court in New Britain, CT.
At its core, the center both embraces and conducts cutting-edge research on teaching practices and the Down syndrome learning profile. That knowledge is then applied through literacy evaluation, one-to-one or small group tutoring, and professional development opportunities.
Tutoring Services
Students age five through adulthood are taught one-to-one or in small groups by a certified special education teacher with additional training in reading intervention. Direct and explicit instruction is delivered one to three times per week, based on the availability of services. Cost varies, depending on DS ACT membership status and need, but the basic hourly rate is $60/hour. Scholarships may be available.
Evaluation Services
Parents and school districts who are seeking independent evaluation of a student’s reading program are provided with a comprehensive report that includes the present level of performance and recommendations for improved instruction.
Professional Development
We offer individual and group professional development programming and short-term mentoring support to school personnel tailored their needs.
Contact Literacy Program Coordinator Melissa Bengtson for information on how we might assist your student or your organization.
